Day 3: John 2 - They Believed

Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name.
— John 2:23, NIV

Today’s Reading Passage: John 2

Imagine you were hosting a barbecue dinner at your house. There are so many people that your home was bursting at the seams, and was pouring out onto your back patio.

The summer weather is perfect.

The conversation with old and new friends is electric.

The beautiful spread of food was one fit for a king.

And then the dreaded words come, “We’ve run out of propane on the gas grill. We won’t be able to finish the barbecue.” Sigh. Have you been there?

Embarrassed.

In desperate need.

Helpless.

Well in John 2, Jesus was at a party with a similar outcome for the hosts. But instead of propane, it was wine. In those days, to run out of food or wine would be devastating to a person’s reputation. The hosts were likely embarrassed, helpless, and in desperate need.

Yet Jesus was there.

He took care of their needs and then some. Notice how He didn’t just provide wine… but the BEST tasting wine!

This was the beginning of the many signs and wonders that Jesus would perform while here on earth.

To those that saw Him at work - they BELIEVED. A common theme we’ll continually run across as we read John. As we see Jesus’ work in the lives of others, we can’t help but be drawn into Him and see that He is who He claimed to be: God (John 1:1).

As you dive into today’s reading, what about Jesus’ first interactions help you believe or have faith in Jesus?

Pray to Jesus, and ask Him to meet you where you are so that you can put your trust in Him, like the many who saw Jesus at work in John 2.
