How to Study Galatians 2:20
Podcast Episode 53: “Crucified with Christ”
In this episode, the Chara project team studies Galatians 2:20 (“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me”) using the CHARA Bible study method (Context, History, Author, Research and Apply). They acknowledge common assumptions that this means we must literally die and question what “crucified with Christ” really entails.
Through studying context, they realize Paul is clarifying that no one is justified by law but only through faith in Christ. Our own efforts cannot save us from sin; Jesus' sacrifice on the cross fully atones. If we could save ourselves, Christ's death would have no purpose. We must cling wholly to Christ, dying to self-righteousness.
Researching word meanings, being “justified” is a legal term for declared righteous, not made righteous by merits. Figurative language depicts complete devotion to and identity in Jesus. Cross references reinforce we are saved by grace, not works. Our old self is crucified and we become alive in Christ, no longer slaves to sin.
In application, they urge evaluating if we've truly surrendered our perceived goodness as means to relate to God. Living fully for Christ brings freedom, but costs reputation and requires boldness. Verse memorization aids internalization.
In summary, “crucified with Christ” is yielding life's throne to Jesus, relying solely on his sacrifice for justification. It brings new identity and power to live righteously. The call is to devote ourselves completely to Christ, not self-effort.
