How to Study the Bible podcast

In this episode, the Chara project team unpack their CHARA Bible study method, which stands for Context, History, Author, Research, Apply. It helps guide questions to understand Scripture on its own terms.

Context examines the surrounding text to grasp the overall theme or meaning. History considers the culture and worldview influencing the original audience. Ask questions like who, what, when, where, why, and how to unlock insights. Author looks at the writer's experiences, purpose, style, repetition, and structure shaping the message.

Research digs into word meanings and translations to clarify intent. It also consults other resources to "triangulate" understanding from multiple angles. Apply wrestles with personal assumptions and biases that distort interpretation. It prioritizes prayer, learning about God's character, and application for today, while respecting the original meaning.

As beginners, focus on immediate context, the author's purpose, different Bible versions, prayer, and awareness of assumptions. Advanced students can explore more questions about culture, word origins, etc. The goal is not more knowledge but transformed lives through encountering God in Scripture.

These simple principles equip everyone to engage the Bible on its own terms, guided by the Spirit. CHARA fosters confidence in discovering meaning for yourself.
