How to Study 1 Corinthians 10:13

Podcast Episode 49: “Tempted Beyond Your Ability”

In this episode, the Chara project team studies 1 Corinthians 10:13, often misquoted as "God won't give you more than you can handle," using the CHARA Bible study method (Context, History, Author, Research and Apply). Looking at context, they realize Paul is warning against idolatry and immorality like the ancient Israelites, not addressing suffering. Through word study, they learn temptation means testing or trial, not solely sinful acts. Prayer helps us avoid and endure temptation.

While the common phrase offers comfort, research shows God does allow overwhelming challenges, even for faithful followers. However, the verse teaches God limits temptation, provides an escape, and remains faithful in our trials. Memorizing Scripture aids battling temptation. Fleeing may be best till mature in Christ.

Timeless principles include learning from others’ mistakes, the need to flee temptation, and arming ourselves with God’s Word while trusting His presence. We also see God's faithfulness to constrain, not remove, temptation. Application involves assessing if we’ve truly submitted areas of weakness to God and whether we’ve hidden Scripture in our hearts to stand firm.

In summary, this verse encourages endurance and divine help facing inevitable temptation, not removal of life’s hardships. Trusting God’s limits and provision brings hope to press on.
